What is Binbot?
Binbot is a robotic bin that gives life and personality to the simple and mundane task that is waste disposal. Having a bin with the capabilities of recognising rubbish and people and acknowledging them with human like mannerisms such as head tilts and eyebrow movements is something that should get a laugh out of all ages and leave them thinking about the moment, which is a powerful result for just throwing away rubbish.
Binbot aims to assist in a variety of ways of varying substantiality, from working towards UN global goals such as sustainable cities and communities and life on land to simply putting a smile on someone's face and making something uninteresting, interesting. Binbot encompasses a number of design features with these values in mind that will make all of these goals possible.
The bin will have rubbish counting, detection and analytical capabilities which allow subscribers to gain insight into their bins performance and builds a foundation for other features. Ultrasonic sensors will be used to determine fullness, which can send notifications to subscribers to alert them and allow them to set their own fullness threshold, and a display will be present on the bin to indicate fullness in person. The display will also show the fullness of the bin in terms of monetary value of the rubbish inside using a barcode scanner system, which will put into better perspective the difference people are making by being proactive with their disposal.
Maintenance features such as the aforementioned fullness notifications will be present, as well as a tilt indicator that notifies subscribers if the bin has been tipped over. Accompanying these emergency notifications will be routine daily or weekly reports on statistics such as rubbish disposed.
Sticking to the theme of making throwing away rubbish fun, Binbot will gamify the experience in schools by having a leaderboard system that ranks classes inside schools and also overall schools. This combined with the display of rubbish in monetary value greatly incentivises schools to be rubbish conscious, and unifies people in this goal rather than pitting individuals against one and other. The rubbish would be converted to money and donated to a charity of the schools choosing.
